UK ECA – FAQ (Version 2 – David Turner 1999) Overview This FAQ is aimed at providing bodybuilders in the UK with additional information needed to obtain and successfully use the ECA stack. This FAQ is not intended to give in depth information, but act as a UK biased extension to all the other ECA info that is in circulation. The technical detail in this FAQ has intensionally been kept to a minimum to make the content accessable to all. What does ECA stand for? ECA stands for Ephedrine Hydrochloride (ephedrine), Caffeine and Aspirin. They are the three ingredients that make up the stack. What the stack can do? Stacking the above ingredients and taking them in doses throughout the day has been shown to help increase fat loss by stimulating your body’s metabolism. (Assuming that you are following a sensible calorie controlled diet.) Additionally, the ECA stack is thought to have anti-catabolic properties, so you lose less muscle while dieting. Who shouldn’t take the stack? The ECA stack acts as a powerful stimulant that can raise your blood pressure and slightly alter the ratio of good / bad cholesteral in the blood. Therefore anyone with high blood pressure or heart problems should not take the stack. Where can I get the stack? In the UK ephedrine is a prescription drug. Therefore it is very difficult to obtain it by itself. Luckily, a product called Do-Do Chesteze contains Ephedrine and is freely available from most chemists in the UK. Chesteze comes in packets of 12 and 36 tablets. Caffeine can also be obtained from most chemists in a product called Pro-Plus. This is available in packets of 24, 48 and 96 tablets. Aspirin is easiest of all to obtain as it is freely available in it’s generic form from all chemists. What if the chemist asks me funny questions? The chemist may ask you questions such as: – Have you taken this before? – Are you on any other medications? – What are your reasons for buying this? The best things to say in reply are: – yes – no – to help my breathing as my chest is a bit tight If you still have problems then you could try going to a small independent chemist who is more likely to serve you without question. It is also an idea to spread your purchases over a few shopping visits to reduce any suspicion. What dosages should I take? The ideal ratio for the ECA stack is 10:1 caffeine to ephedrine. Many sources suggest that the ideal dosage is 25mg ephedrine, 250mg caffeine and 80-300mg aspirin. More specifically, you could take 1 Chesteze, 3-4 Pro-plus and half a full dose aspirin. This gives you 18.3 mg ephedrine, 180mg caffeine, 150mg aspirin. Some people take double the dosage of Chesteze and Pro-plus, but this is an individual thing so I would start at this lower dosage and see how it effects you. How often? The above dosage should be taken 3 times a day with at least 3 hours in between. It is also recommended that your last dose should be before 6:00 pm, or you may have problems getting to sleep. Some people recommend only taking the stack 5 days a week with 2 days off to allow your body a small break from the effects. Others stay on it 7 days a week. Again this is a personal thing so you may want to experiment. Along the same lines, some people will use the stack for weeks without stopping. Other’s will cycle the doses i.e. 2 weeks on then a week off etc. It is recommended that 4 weeks would be about the maximum that you should stay on the stack without a break of at least a week. The basic rational is that your body will become used to the ECA stack stimulation and the effects will wear off. By taking a break, it is possible for your body to reap better rewards when you go back on the stack. The wired up feeling is likely to diminish within 1-2 weeks of starting the stack. Evidence shows that the fat burning properties of the stack still continue well after that time, so do not assume that an immediate break is needed. What is this Theophylline ingredient in Chesteze? Theophylline is a kind of sister drug to caffeine. (i.e. it is a member of the same family of drugs.) They are both stimulants and work in very similar ways. Theophylline does stimulate the heart muscle tissue to a greater extent than caffeine, but is safe in doses of under 1000 mg a day. Some say that since theophylline is very like caffeine, you can reduce the dosage of caffeine in the stack by 100mg. Again experiment. Conclusion The ECA has been used by thousands of people to help them lose weight. It has been shown to be safe and effective and not have any noticable side-effects. It most certainly is not "illegal". Bulk ephedrine and bulk pseudo- ephedrine are "watched" compounds (sale of which alerts the DEA), but they’re components of a variety of OTC nostrums which are perfectly legal to sell and purchase in most US states. The FDA has been trying to put limits on the amount of ephedrine per dose in OTC preparations. I don’t know where that stands. However, this doesn’t criminalize the use of the drug (unless you’re trying to synthesize methamphetamine). — Steve Dyer

A few states in the US have prohibited ephedrine without prescription. In most states of the US it is freely available over the counter in asthma remedies like Primatene and Bronk-Aid. It is merely not sold over the counter as ephedrine alone, but combined with guaifenesin. Allegedly the guaifenesin renders it useless for making speed. Texas had a debate last summer regarding banning ephedrine. The proposal was shot down, but they intended to grandfather the brand-name asthma remedies, and only outlaw the diet preparations and Mini-Thins. Banning the Mini-Thins (which are now called Two-Way tablets) while allowing the Primatene was a really dumb idea, as they contain the exact same active ingredients per dose, and have almost identical text on the label as an asthma treatment as the Primatene label. I believe it’s only illegal in certain states. I know Florida, where I live, passed a law a year or two ago which prohibits its sale within the state. At the time our local newspaper had a list of several other states where it’s forbidden. I can’t imagine why several states would have laws against it if it were against the law to sell it in the entire country. Stop by your local 7-11 and ask Mohammed for the Mini thins or something like that. The makers of the ephedrine tabs have included Guafenisen (sp?) in them and sell them as a decongestant like over the counter med. Guaf. is almost impossible to separate from the Ephed. to the normal crank head. It takes a more powerful solvent to separate and may interfere with the reduction process of making meth. The local Costco pharmacy department limits the sale of pseudoephedrine preparations to two per customer. I haven’t noticed restrictions elsewhere. All you can get today is pseudoephedrine, which does fsck all as a component of an ECA stack.
However, it’s a perfectly good precursor to kitchen-lab methamphetamine.
